CNC Grinding and Beyond

CNC grinding is still not as common as we thought it would be by now. We are one of the few machine shops that owns a CNC grinder and uses it daily. We do outside work as well, but predominately it is for our own use. We selected the Toyoda Select G for it's 40 inches of travel and it's ability to grind radii and angles at the same time.       Metalmite uses CNC Grinding to save time and money for finish parts. Our CNC Grinder averaged four minutes per part for the … [Read more...]

Metalmite says small holes, no problem

Recently someone contacted us and asked if we liked to machine very small parts. I said not sure if we like it or just end up having to do it a lot, but it is very common at Metalmite. In the picture attached here you will see a .027 inch drill that we needed to use in hundreds of parts.  This is where our Mori Seiki NV1500DCG "Mini mill" really excelerates!   Check it out! Read more "High Speed” and “Hard” Milling – what are they AND how do they get me what I want faster, better and cheaper? … [Read more...]

One year later, missing the founder at Metalmite

It has been one year since we lost our founder Mike Gendich to his battle with cancer. Everyday we see the fruits of his labor and we seek to make him proud of the work we continue to do. Thank you for your support and for the great relationship you have continued to foster with our company.    Those who had the privilege of knowing Mike Gendich knew he was a man who lived life to the fullest! Known for his generosity and his zeal for adventure, it was not uncommon to find him racing … [Read more...]

Machine Shops in Detroit Area close down

I received word this month that a couple machine shops in our area have closed their doors. I have not heard why or any other details though. We decided that if we could help in any way we would. If your company had open orders with a shop that closed, we are willing to look the job over and see if we can complete it for you. We know that by the grace of God we are still here, and we want to make the most of our time serving others.  The shops that people told us had closed are: Valiant … [Read more...]

CNC Programming- CNC Grinding and More

In 2012 we purchased our first CNC Grinder. In the first year we ground more than 10,000 parts and averaged less than 4 minutes a piece. The accuracy increased tremendously when we allowed the machine to line up the next operation. As you can see from the photo attached, the programming is done at the machine with the conversational control. We have been really happy with the results and our customers have been more than thrilled with the faster deliveries and reduced cost from less runtime. … [Read more...]

6 Axis Turning and Milling- Multi-Tool-Machining (MTM)

In 2004 when we purchased our first multi-tool machine, or MTM, it opened the doors to a whole new world of machining.  Customers were able to see the immediate cost savings when we only had one setup to make a complicated part for them.  The accuracy increased tremendously when we allowed the machine to line up the next operation.  As you can see from the photo attached, parts went from simple to complex in one machine with several operations being coordinated at one time. To have the ability … [Read more...]

High-speed milling and More at Metalmite

Many times people ask what size parts we machine here at Metalmite.  Knowing that we do a lot of 5 axis machining as well as 6 axis turning & milling, they wonder if we make large or small parts.  It is difficult to answer this question because people tend to hear what they want to hear.  If we say yes to everything they just think we are bragging.  The parts in the picture attached to this post are small enough to put a 100 piece in the palm or your hand.  It is hardened stainless steel and … [Read more...]

No Thread Left Behind!

We were manufacturing a shaft for a customer that was made from 1050 steel and was hardened to 60 Rockwell C and needed to have a thread put on after. This particular thread had a milled keyway through the middle of it as well. We typically send this kind of part out for thread grinding as a last operation. Our CNC turning manager asked if he could contact Sandvik Corporation to see about hard threading (as opposed to hard turning) these parts while finishing his other operations in the lathe. … [Read more...]
