Production or Prototype at Metalmite?

Customers always ask if we are a production or a prototype shop. This question is difficult to answer because we do BOTH! We often do the first round of prototypes for a customer when a part has never been manufactured before. Then we can stay involved until the part hits 10,000 pcs and then we tend to move on. There have been a few products that we have entertained making 30,000 or 40,000pcs annually however. So do not count us out for the bid! We are often asked how quickly a part like … [Read more...]

Is your Yoke too much?

Metalmite has been known to make yokes from solid in record time and at record low cost. We have 5 and 6 axis equipment that can make these parts in 1 or 2 operations complete! We can even put the splines in using wire EDM or other methods. Our customers agree that the costs have come down substantially since we have made the investment in this new technology. CNC milling department has grown substantially over the last 10 years. We have added multiple 5 axis machining centers, multiple … [Read more...]

Small But Detailed Parts

Metalmite is known for extreme accuracy on very small parts. We have a "Mini-mill" that is made by Mori Seiki and several other machines that excel in making small details. The following parts have a series of tiny holes around the ID as you can see in the photo. We take pride in making sure every feature is covered and accurate to customer specifications. Metalmite uses 5 axis machining to get the hard-to-reach areas of many parts as well. Our DMG Mori Seiki Mills are the most powerful on … [Read more...]

CV Joints Finished on the CNC Mill

For years we have been asked to help prototype Outer Races for the CV Joint and Driveline groups that we work for. We have always been able to rough them out and grind everything except the ball tracks after heat treat. This year we explored our options in tooling and quality assurance and found that we could finish the tracks on all 300 pcs for a customer!  We are so excited that our new DMG Mori machines and our partners at ISCAR and Sandvik are able to develop and hold these … [Read more...]

SAE equivalent steel for XC38

At Metalmite we quote many various kinds of steel and aluminum to our customers. Many times we get requests that we are not familiar with and we need to do some research.  Earlier this year we had a request to make something out of XC38 steel.  As we dug in to Google we quickly found out that this is a French callout for a 1035 grade steel.  A relatively low carbon alloy strip steel.   We were able to offer the 1045 steel that is more prevalent in the USA as a substitute.   You only … [Read more...]

Metalmite Goes Green! With MSU Baja Racing

Metalmite was happy to receive the call from Michigan State University (also known as the only real University of Michigan) to assist in the machining and development of their Baja race vehicle. Metalmite was called upon to use the 5 axis mill to surface the gearbox case.   After hours of machining and creating the perfect gearbox the car was ready.  Enjoy the photos provided and the update from the team below.  You will notice that "Metalmite" received a great position on the door for the … [Read more...]

Why I Run: Metalmite’s Steve Shelton

Steve Shelton of Metalmite was challenged to do a half-marathon with his church to raise money for some wells in Africa.  He was overwhelmed by the challenge because as he stated in this interview he was, "to old and to overweight to do that many miles."  Watch the video attached to this post and you can see how he and several others raised over two million dollars so far towards these wells. Steve states, "Most of my life was for myself, and now because of this I am living for other … [Read more...]

Aluminum is our friend- Five Axis Milling is too!

We enjoy machining aluminum whenever we get the chance. It is a welcomed change after machining the alloy and hardened steels we typically get. Whether it is 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 we just let the end mills to the talking and push through as fast as they will allow. I am amazed that we can sometimes look at a job after running it several times and find yet another way to make it go smoother. Recently we purchased VoluMILL and added it to our Gibbs Cam software. After going back and re-posting jobs … [Read more...]

Five Axis machining at Metalmite

Do not turn your monitor sideways, this is a 5 axis mill and the vise is turned 90 degrees so we can make the part complete. This is one of the many benefits of 5 axis machining. We have enjoyed the benefits of these machines for over 5 years now. Our Mori Sieki 5 axis mill is the strongest on the market today. It will also work and a vertical or horizontal lathe as it turns the part up to 2000 RPM.    Read moreSo why do you need full 5 axis machining from Metalmite? To help increase your … [Read more...]

Sizing the Gear up!

When you make a lot of gears and splines you know that sometimes they can move in the process.  This happens in the heat treat process many times.  Recently here at Metalmite we had an entire batch of gears shrink an unexpected amount.  Upon full review after heat treat, we discussed with everyone involved the possible next steps.  The head of our 5 axis CNC milling department came up with a brillant plan.  He designed and built a partial gear broach that would locate and size each part … [Read more...]
