Simple Hubs

Every single part we machine here is not cutting- edge 5 or 6 axis mind-blowing crazy you know? Sometimes we get simple hubs, or other parts that anyone could make. But our mission is to turn customer's needs into reality better and faster than anyone else! In order for that to happen we need to be able to do the simple along with the "near-impossible" Metalmite uses 6 axis lathes and 5 axis mills to stay current with technology. We are a full-service machine shop located in Rochester, … [Read more...]

5 Axis on Face-Splines

We have been asked by customers to use our 5 axis technology to machine many things. One of the more common requests is a face-spline. We are able to read the model and mill the spline complete. The reason these are not easy for anyone to do is that they require constant axis synchronous movement and CAD-CAM software to support this. So why do you need full 5 axis machining from Metalmite? To help increase your market-share, increase your sales and increase your profits. In addition, you … [Read more...]

3D Machining on 6 Axis

We machine complex parts a variety of ways using 6 axis machining. We are able to spline parts 3 different ways in house- by live tooling on the lathe, by Wire EDM, and by milling the spline teeth! We are machining this part in the photo attached on a 4 axis rotary table. We use 3D software to machine complete. Metalmite is known for fast lathe turn-around time! We have had an influx of lathe work that we are thrilled to turnaround fast. We have been able to help multiple customers … [Read more...]

Production or Prototype at Metalmite?

Customers always ask if we are a production or a prototype shop. This question is difficult to answer because we do BOTH! We often do the first round of prototypes for a customer when a part has never been manufactured before. Then we can stay involved until the part hits 10,000 pcs and then we tend to move on. There have been a few products that we have entertained making 30,000 or 40,000pcs annually however. So do not count us out for the bid! We are often asked how quickly a part like … [Read more...]

Metalmite and New Technology

New technology is always on the horizon. We were able to see first-hand the latest machinery and equipment at the Chicago tool show- IMTS this last year.  We have just been quoted a new machine that will increase our capacity and reduce our lead-times substantially!  We are looking into these kinds of options to help us be competitive and the help our customers meet their demands. Pictures are courtesy of the DMG Mori website. Metalmite uses 6 axis lathes and 5 axis mills to stay current … [Read more...]

Memorable Mike

Our founder, Mike Gendich, was certainly memorable to all he came in contact with.  Whether is was the little yellow dog that went everywhere with him (including customer's shop floors) or the Segway he would ride around on, unicycles, hang gliders, his Harley, the ice cream truck, or any of the other of hundreds of things he did that causes everyone he knew to smile when they think about him- no one argues that he was in fact memorable.  The dictionary defines memorable as: worth remembering or … [Read more...]

Five Axis Milling on Internal Diameters

Many time the most difficult part for us to machine is the interior features of a detail. For example, if you look at the attached photo you will see that there are many square features that protrude towards the inside and they all need to be machined in.  Years ago we relied on slotting and shaper cutters to do this feature for us. Today we use our DMG Mori Seiki NMV 5000 five axis mill and make it complete. You can see the cut lines and interior detail that came out so smoothly. … [Read more...]

Gearing Up

Metalmite has made more gears in the last 5 years than we have ever before. Many customers did not even know that we made gears, but when they come to review their jobs here they see hundreds upon hundreds of gears ready to ship.  We cut splines and gears in many ways in house and with support from vendors. We use Fellows Gear Shapers and Wire EDM as well as CNC technologies to make perfect gear teeth!   Metalmite has manufactured tens of thousands of gears and splines through the … [Read more...]

Plastic machining at Metalmite

Metalmite has been asked to make many parts out of various plastics. People have asked why these manufacturers do not just use the new SLS technology Plastic Parts (Selective Laser Sintering) or the SLA or other 3D printing processes to make these parts in minutes.  Well, simply because there are only a few material options with those processes. We can machine almost anything. We have made medical products, aerospace plastics, and even hard plastics that can barely be cut … [Read more...]
