3D Printing at Metalmite

As we have started using the 3D printers now at Metalmite we are finding new uses everyday! We have used the Carbon-fiber and the Nylon in several applications and have learned that there are even more uses than we imagined. The 17-4 printer is close to ready and we look forward to printing the steel parts very soon! Metalmite will be capable of printing aluminum, tool steel, stainless, and HSLA now. According to an article in 3dprintingindustry.com "The proposed U.S. military budget for … [Read more...]

3D Printing is at Metalmite

We are always looking for ways to provide faster service while maintaining our strict quality standards. Recently we were made aware of this 3D Printer from 3D systems that can "print" parts in a matter of hours! We purchased th ProX DMP 300 and a Markforged Mark Two printer. We can print 17-4 stainless, a 4140 type of steel, and Aluminium on the DMP 300 and we can print plastic, carbonfiber, and kevlar on the Markforged. We are excited to be able to offer these services to you and others at a … [Read more...]

Quality and Safety

Recently I read an article about how quality and safety go hand and hand. You would not normally think these two are related in that way. But the article talked about how the CEO of Alcoa, Paul O’Neill, made it his number one objective to keep the workers safe. From this goal he also increased their quality, their profits, and their communication company-wide! It was a phenomenal feat. When people are safe, they work smart and think clear, We enforce the safety glasses and we publish the OSHA … [Read more...]

3D Surfacing on CNC Mills

Using the latest Gibbs Cam software we are able to surface parts like this out of solid and get prototype parts to our customer as needed. These parts are simulating a rough casting so they are meant to look unfinished. We are able to take advantage of Volumill and machine parts in half the time using the algorithm that they calculated out for milling faster. Learn more about Volumill here: VoluMill™ within GibbsCAM offers expanded milling solutions for cutting methods that … [Read more...]

Wire EDM does what others can’t

Wire EDM has been a life-saver for Metalmite for more than 20 years! We are able to cut things that conventional tools cannot and able to hold sizes that normally are only on grinders. We have learned to group multiple parts on one fixture that we designed in order to maximize returns. We have run as many as 35 parts when they were small enough. This allows us to keep the machine running even when we are not there. Metalmite, located in Rochester, Michigan — approximately 20 miles outside of … [Read more...]

CNC Grinding and Beyond

CNC grinding is still not as common as we thought it would be by now. We are one of the few machine shops that owns a CNC grinder and uses it daily. We do outside work as well, but predominately it is for our own use. We selected the Toyoda Select G for it's 40 inches of travel and it's ability to grind radii and angles at the same time.       Metalmite uses CNC Grinding to save time and money for finish parts. Our CNC Grinder averaged four minutes per part for the … [Read more...]

5 Axis on Face-Splines

We have been asked by customers to use our 5 axis technology to machine many things. One of the more common requests is a face-spline. We are able to read the model and mill the spline complete. The reason these are not easy for anyone to do is that they require constant axis synchronous movement and CAD-CAM software to support this. So why do you need full 5 axis machining from Metalmite? To help increase your market-share, increase your sales and increase your profits. In addition, you … [Read more...]

Production or Prototype at Metalmite?

Customers always ask if we are a production or a prototype shop. This question is difficult to answer because we do BOTH! We often do the first round of prototypes for a customer when a part has never been manufactured before. Then we can stay involved until the part hits 10,000 pcs and then we tend to move on. There have been a few products that we have entertained making 30,000 or 40,000pcs annually however. So do not count us out for the bid! We are often asked how quickly a part like … [Read more...]

Blue Coats are Coming!

Metalmite takes Quality very seriously! Our new Quality Assurance Manager has made sure that the members of the Quality Department are clearly noticed as well. You will see them in the blue lab coats. They will also be holding the new ISO 9001:2015 Certification in their hands very shortly as they are pressing forward with the upgrade for Metalmite. Here are the main benefits of the ISO upgrade: The benefits of ISO 9001 are not overstated; companies large and small have gained great … [Read more...]
